Where is innovation born? Sure, sometimes an apple falls on your head and you get that stroke of genius, but probably more often than not, innovation isn't a singular individual ah-ha moment. Instead, most innovations are born in places where ideas can combine to form new, bigger and better ideas. In fact, the actual physical place (or space) where innovation happens probably plays a bigger role in growth than most people think.

Take Alcoa, the aluminum giant, for example. During the early 90s, they followed people into their homes to study how they consumed soda (or pop if you're from Idaho). They found that many consumers preferred storing a 2-liter bottle of soda pop in their refrigerator instead of aluminum cans bound together with plastic rings. (Remember those?) They observed that the soda was consumed pretty quickly until the last one or two servings. Consumers reported that they didn’t want the last serving for two reasons: 1) they wanted to be polite and not take the last serving, or 2) the last serving had usually lost its fizz by that point.

As a result of their research, Alcoa developed an ingenious solution that has been universally adopted by soda companies today.
